Mohr
Car and fueling station come in about twenty small pieces, including tiny – and I mean TINY – screws. You will need an eyeglass sized philips head screwdriver. My son had difficulty with the screws so I ended up placing them. The problem comes in that I had to exert great force to drive the screws into the thin, brittle plastic. That required both great force and great delicacy in order to keep from breaking the toy. I also stripped one of the screws. The instructions are extremely wordy and unhelpful for several steps. When we finally got everything put together, it took about fifteen minutes to charge the hydrogen tank. Then the car ran for about two minutes. It was the most slow and boring remote control car my son ever had. The car will only run on hard floors, not carpet. After running it once, my son asked if we could return it and get our money back.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Prices 2

Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe. An invisible, tasteless, colorless gas, it may be converted to nonpolluting, zero-emission, renewable energy. When burned in an internal combustion engine, hydrogen gives rise to largely harmless water vapor. It performs even better in fuel cells, which may be 2.5 times as effective as internal-combustion engines. Zero-emission hydrogen does not bestow to CO2-caused global warming. Abundant and renewable, it is improbable to be subject to geopolitical pressures or scarcity concerns. In this new edition of his pioneering book Tomorrow’s Energy, Peter Hoffmann makes the case for hydrogen as the cornerstone of a new energy economy. Hoffmann covers the major distinct elements of hydrogen production, storage, transportation, fuel use, and safety. He explains that hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier, like electricity, and introduces the conception of “hydricity,” the necessary exchangeability of electricity and hydrogen. He brings the hydrogen story up to date, reporting on the latest developments, including new hydrogen and fuel-cell cars from GM, Daimler, BMW, Honda, and Toyota. He describes recent political controversies, including Obama administration Energy Secretary (and Nobel laureate in Physics) Steven Chu’s inexplicable dismissal of hydrogen–which puts him at odds with major automakers, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and others. Our current energy scheme is a complex infrastructure, and phasing in hydrogen will take venture and money. But if we consider the real costs of fossil fuels–pollution and it is effects, international tensions over gas and oil supplies, and climate change–we would be wise to advertize it is development.

Dean
Spent a weekend reviewing various GPS devices to replace my less than 1 year old Mio C320 (avoid these like the plague) that had its battery die about 4 months after purchase. Went back and forth along the entire line of Garmin devices, and finally settled on this one for the blue tooth and traffic, neither of which I’ll probably hardly ever use, but nice to have when I want them.

I was disappointed with the map, the “new” 2009 one, because I have some streets in my neighborhood that have been around for over four years and they’re not to be found on this unit. Even the piece of junk cheap Mio had these streets.

But that’s about the only downside there is to it, the only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars.

Having been used to the MIO, and the horrible refresh rate, it is a pleasant change to see smooth scrolling as my vehicle moves. The ability to change the car icon is nice, especially with the plethora of icons available on the garmin website.

Accuracy is very good as well, and even in turns the unit isn’t so laggy that it becomes annoying. And also unlike what I was used to with the MIO, when I come to a stop at the intersection, the map doesn’t start rotating randomly on me.

Speaker is about as I expected, won’t hear much over a loud stereo but crank it up enough you can at least hear it if you keep the music down a bit.

The option to easily download voices is also appreciated.

It did well with my testing of going point to point, following the instructions, and for the most part you’re given the instructions in plenty of time. only once or twice did it not tell me “turn right on such and such” until I was about 20 feet from the street, but that was when I was coming up on stop signs and had slowed down, so it may be compensating for the speed factor.

Recalculation notice is a bit annoying, my MIO would say it once, sometimes this says it three times before it starts to display the alternate route.

Still has about 900MB free on the internal memory for additional voices, icons, maps, and such, and with the SD slot there’s plenty of room to grow.

I have a Verizon XV6900 phone with Windows Mobile 6.1, and while the bluetooth paired well and it can see the phone status, battery power, signal, even dialed and missed call lists, it never does get the phonebook. it gets a random entry and that’s it – so whenever I turn it on, I have just one user to select from, and it’s different each time. Still haven’t tracked that one down yet. But every other bluetooth option worked just fine.

I’m not a fan of the very thick double power cable for it though, and it would be doubly annoying (no pun intended) if I were mounting this somewhere higher up on the window to have that double cable dangling down.

I can see how the ads would get annoying sometimes (the free traffic is because it is advertising driven) but you don’t get them at all if you turn off the traffic feature, and since most of my driving isn’t around times that traffic is a concern, i can just leave it for when I really have a use for it.

Good response to finger input, and while the unit is overall much better quality than the MIO, I really do miss the MIO’s ability to have an info pane down the last third of the screen and the map on the first two thirds of it when desired. But there’s some of that info available in the data bubbles on the bottom and top so I’ll survive.

Overall happy with the unit, it works well and was worth the cost.

Flat out before I even get started the Garmin Nuvi 265WT is the best I have ever owned. Let me just make a couple of comments on the most important features.

Touch Screen Interface
Very intuitive and easy to use. Touch screen is responsive but not instantaneous. What I particularly like is the ability to switch to a top down view by touching the screen. Once done you can use your finger to drag the map around at any zoom point. Once done you can hit the back button and resume your 3D view.

Turn by Turn
You have two options here. You can use one of the Text to Speech voices or one of natural voices. The text to speech voices will give you more information such as street names. This is what I use and even though you can tell it’s a computer generated voice its quality is superb. The 265WT does a good job at keeping you updated. Also at any time you can hit the turn Icon and it will speak the distance to the next turn, giving you street name as well as direction. The audio is quite loud and in my noisy little Scion I have no problem hearing the messages.

Maps
I have found the map accuracy quite good. I live in Northern virginal and it seems to be very well updated as many of the very new streets included.

Automatic Routing
Very effective. You can choose between the quickest or the shortest with options to avoid U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Traffic, Ferries. The automatic rerouting is faster than my TeleNav phone and my Laptop computers.

Points of Interest
On my TeleNav phone GPS system I can enter any business in the national database and I can get directions, address and phone number. This is where the 265WT falls short. The TeleNav system has the advantage of searching online. Since the 265WT is limited to onboard memory there is a limit to the number of points of interest. A good example is I was looking for “Off Broadway Shoes” and the unit could not find them. However a search for “Payless Shoes” worked very well.

Traffic Alerts
The lifetime free traffic comes at a price. You will get popup adds. These are very small popups that supposedly only come when you are in the menu. This is not true. I have gotten them while in the navigation screen. For now they it seems to be once per trip but there is nothing to say they wont start getting more frequent. The other thing I don’t like about the messages is that you have to hit them to continue and doing so takes you out of the nav screen to a kind of favorites screen. You have to hit the back button to get back to your navigations screen.
How well does the traffic system work. I live in Northern VA and have coverage throughout my area. The included radio fails to pick up a single signal without using an external antenna. Sadly you can just go down and purchase an FM antenna.. The Power cable has a 3/32″ jack. What I did was to pick up a 3/32″ plug from Radio Shack and soldered a 4′ wire to the tip pin on the connector. Once draped out one of the windows I get very frequent traffic updates.
Once you start getting traffic reports I found them to be accurate and they do help. You can automatically avoid high traffic arias or do it manually as they accrue.
I am still debating if the popup adds are worth the effort.

Bluetooth Integration
This is my favorite feature. I can keep my keyboard locked Motorola Q in my pants pocket and use my 265WT to make and receive all my calls at a touch of a button. All my phone features are available on the 265WT. Phonebook, Call history, Voice Recognition. The voice quality is quite acceptable on both ends. As a matter of fact the echo I get on my Motorola is not there when using the 265WT as a hands free set.

Picture Viewer
I found this to be a very useless feature. If the photos are very big it takes forever for the 265WT to load them. This may be due to the slow access to the SD card slot.

There are other features like the ability to connect the 265WT to your PC and automatically add favorite locations using GoogleMaps. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and would purchase it again.

FYI the Nuvi 265WT is the same unit as the Nuvi 255W without the Bluetooth ability and the FM reliever cable (GTM 25). You can even purchase the GTM 25 from Garmin. If you don’t want the Bluetooth feature and don’t currently need the traffic feature you can pick up the Nuvi 255W cheaper.

Although this is the first GPS that I’ve owned, I’ve been passenger on many trips with a friend who has Nuvi 350 so I was already familiar with Garmin. The unit I bought had the 2009 maps, and the firmware was fairly recent. Firmware, etc has since been updated to most recent version(s).
My choice came down to the nuvi 265WT, 765T or 760. The 760 is a premium unit for a bargain price due it’s being last years model, while the 765T had the features I wanted but is still pricey since it’s a new model. In the end I opted for 265WT since it had the updated/new features that the 760 didn’t have and was at the price that I was willing to spend. I did not really consider other brands, though my impression is that other brands offer more “bells and whistles” but suffer in the areas of ease of use and reliability.
The unit has worked fine, no problems to speak of, though my actual time spend driving with it has been limited so far (spent lots of time just “playing” with it, though).

[update 9/11/09]
I’ve now used for a week of commuting to work and running errands. I use for commute because of the traffic reporting.

traffic — haven’t encountered a backup that it didn’t warn me about, but have driven through a couple of non-existent backups. I’ve also found that it can take several minutes for the traffic status to be displayed after power-on, sometimes *after* it has picked a route.

routing — the route it gives me to work is rather strange. It routes me off of the freeway onto an expressway that has several lights. I tried it once, and sure enough it took longer than predicted, even with light traffic.

reliability — The unit has “glitched” 3 times in the last week. Once it just turned itself off, another time it jumped from the map to the speedometer screen (by itself) while the voice became very distorted, and another time the backlight setting was not as I had left it.
[end of 9/1/09 update]

My biggest complaint has to do with the POI database. For example, I searched for local cinema’s… it did not have the 20 screen cineplex that is closest to me. When I searched for local Staples Office Supply locations the closest it found was 50 miles away, even though there are at least 4 within 15 miles. I didn’t show a nearby Britannia Arms. A large regional shopping center is still called by a name that was dropped 5 years ago. etc…
The POI management software (such as it is) could use more flexibility. For example, when searching for Staples, the unit was “busy” quite some time searching. There appears to be no way to put a limit the search distance.
I think the map update policy is in need of revising. A two month “grace period” is not really fair to the buyers. Most of these are sold in Nov & Dec, and the maps are typically updated in the Spring, beyond the 60 day cutoff. Garmin should be guaranteeing map updates for at least 6 months, if not a year. Or, one free update within 2 years or something similar. Another gripe is the Garmin request for an “account” to register the unit. Yet another user name and password to forget.

[update 1/9/09]
At 2009 CES, Garmin announced a new map update policy. For $120 you get lifetime updates (“up to” 4 times a year) while a single update will be $69, which (I think) is less than before.
[end of 1/9/09 update]

Hydrogen Fuel Source

Hydrogen is the most plenteous factor in the universe. He explains that hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier, like electricity, and introduces the conception of “hydricity,” the necessary interchangeability of electricity and hydrogen. Our current energy system is a complex infrastructure, and phasing in hydrogen will take effort and money. But if we consider the real costs of fossil fuels–pollution and it is effects, global tensions over gas and oil supplies, and climate change–we would be wise to publicize it is development.

ReviewThe word hydrogen conjures images of ravaging bombs and burning zeppelins (the Hindenburg) for most of us, but it inspires visionaries like Peter Hoffmann to picture clear skies and safer roads. Hoffmann’s book Tomorrow’s Energy traces the history of the volatile gas and explores choices for it is use as fuel. Though the author can’t stay clear from using a lot of technical language, his writing will have to still appeal well beyond the community of automotive and power-plant engineers. His coverage, though somewhat balanced, have a tendancy toward the positive attempts made by government, corporations, environmentalists, and scientists to advertize hydrogen as a clean, comparatively safe, and potentially cheap substitute to carbon-heavy fuels.

Party-line Greens may gasp at a great deal of of the suggested schemes, which include using fixed nuclear power to generate hydrogen from water. But Hoffmann convincingly assures the reader that ultimately, the planet will be better off this way. Many will be amazed at how far hydrogen has innovative since severe exploration restarted for the duration of the 1970s fuel crisis: the range of cars, planes, and power networks using the gas for power storage is impressive and underreported.

Though he makes his case for hydrogen as a means of powering our lives, Hoffmann also shows off it is uses in medicine, agriculture, metallurgy, and other fields. Using economic data, he shows that we may suppose to live in a hydrogen economy sometime midcentury; if so, we may all breathe a collective, CO2-laden sigh of relief. –Rob Lightner

From Library JournalEditor of The Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter and author of The Forever Fuel: The Story of Hydrogen, Hoffmann chronicles the global progress of hydrogen energy from a niche market to a viable mercantile product. Arguing that fossil fuels will not be cheap to find in the future and that renewables are getting less expensive, he advocates the use of hydrogen as a nonpolluting form of energy for fuel cells and as an energy storage medium. Hoffmann exhaustively details the history of hydrogen projects international from experimental fuel cell vehicles developed by the major automati manufacturers to exploration into the use of hydrogen as airplane fuel, the application of hydrogen in utilities in Germany and China, and a few experimental hydrogen-powered houses in the United States. Hoffmann frankly explains the masters and cons of the hydrogen debate, including safety issues, economics, and the difficultness in moving our national energy policy away from fossil fuels. Because there are so few books on this energy source, academic and public libraries that have a strong interest in substitute energy materials will want to buy for informed readers. Carver
This text provides an exceptionally low level of information on a rather diverse and exciting field. I realize that I am probably not the target audience of this work, but it really could have stood to add some information digestible above the 8th-grade reading level. Secondarily, it reads like a product catalog for [...] with poorly written “projects” attached to the product descriptions.

I realize that a two star rating on Amazon.com is a rather scathing appraisal, but I feel it is appropriate in this case. I understand that this is a recently released book, indeed my copy is a first edition. Even considering that, this book should have never made it into print in its current condition. Typos and blatant errors infest the entire work. Captions are attached to the wrong pictures, pictures have text cut off of them, in fact entire paragraphs repeat the same information contained in the previous paragraph. Frankly it speaks to me of markedly poor copy editing (or in my opinion, no editing whatsoever) and provides a fine example of the failure of companies like McGraw-Hill to continue their production of quality material.

It explains the basic concepts and how to build your own simple fuel cells without getting overly technical. It covers a lot of the different fuel cells types. I had previously only known about PEM and methanol fuel cells and this book has interested me into doing further research on microbial fuel cells.

My one issue with the book is with the part numbers listed for items from Fuel Cell Store (which the author mentioned working with to write this book). The part numbers listed were not always able to be found on the website. The alkaline fuel cell from the book is one example, it is no longer available from the store. I was able to find the manufacturer’s website and they said they are no longer making it. For a book that was just published this seemed odd and these errors should been caught during proofreading. These errors are more of an issue with the earlier chapters and with experiments that most people are probably going to skip anyway to get to the more interesting ones.

If you have decisive to experiment with hydrogen fuel and would like to build a fuel saver Hydrogen Generator, I would suggest the HHO Dry Cell design. The old water4gas HHO generator design was discarded by the masters long ago, and the hydrogen generators known as wet cells are inferior to the new HHO arid cell design.

Here are a few reasons why the new “HHO arid cell” kits are better than the old water4gas and wet cell designs.

The old wet cell designs had a big amount of voltage leakage around the edges of the stainless plates. What this means is that part of the supplied current was not reaching the plates where the electrolysis procedure takes place, so you had to deliver more voltage in order to invent the desired amount of HHO gas. You do not have this current loss on an HHO arid design. With the new HHO arid cell design, the electrical current is focalized on the arid cell plates, this is how the arid cell formulates more hydrogen fuel with the use of less amps.

The HHO drycell is normally set up with four or five neutral plates, encased in assorted negative and positive stainless plates. The intent of the neutral plate is to support lower the voltage amidst the positive and negative plates which will make this cell run much more efficiently. This design gives rise to less heat and will form more HHO gas than the old water4gas and wet cell hydrogen generators, using less amps.

Another outstanding betterment made with the HHO cell is the size of the unit. You may build an HHO dry-cell that is only 4″ x 4″ that will create as much HHO gas as an old 6″ x 12″ wet cell. Because of this great betterment in design, the dry-cell-kit may be installed in an area with less available space.

If you are ready to build an HHO generator, don’t even think regarding buying HHO plans, you may get free plans for arid and wet cells all over the Internet. I have been supplying DIY HHO plans for free, for assorted years. Secondarily, it reads like a product catalog for [...] with poorly written “projects” attached to the product descriptions.

When we mention Oil, most persons think “gasoline”. While it is unfeigned that with regards to half of the crude oil we use each day gets refined into gasoline, that is only half of what we use. What does the other half do? The intention of this exercise is to figure out where all that oil goes, and what it is applied for. All crude oil has to be refined before it is used, so we will look at what came out of our refineries. We will use October of 2009 as an example.

US refineries supplied 543,158,000 barrels of merchandise in October 2009. That is in regards to 17,521,000 Barrels per day. We’re gonna see what those merchandise were, but first, a short word from the bean counter (me). Tracking each single barrel of oil through the complex network of imports, exports, in and outs, processes and transportation is a daunting task. Even for one as smart as me. Every crusade was made to make sure all of the figures here, and allround this blog, add up. And, they come amazing close. But they are not rather perfect. There are losses, leaks, and slight inconsistencies in all of the numbers, facts and info used. What follows is surely close sufficient for all but an IRS Tax assessor. Most of my selective information is from the EIA (Energy Information Agency)

One other note. A refinery experiences something called refinery gain. Due to respective things such as additives, the output of a refinery is approximately 5-8% more than the crude oil inputs. This is why, while refineries applied 504,607,000 barrels of crude (16,277,000 bbl per day), they devised 543,158,000 (17,521,000 Barrels per day) of product in October 2009. So, lets now take a look at what came out of those US refineries in October of 2009.

These numbers are the total for the month of October 2009.

* Finished Motor Fuel (Gasoline): 271,299,000 bbl

* Distillate Fuel Oil (mostly No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 diesel fuel ): 123,509,000 bbl

* Residual Fuel Oil (No. 5 and No. 6 fuel oils, includes Bunker C fuel oil): 20,851,000 bbl

* Jet Fuel (Kerosene): 40,036,000 bbl

* Petroleum Coke (Similar to Coal): 23,823,000 bbl

* Still Gas (Gaseous byproducts of refining): 19,096,000 bbl

*  Propane/Propylene:  16,392,000  bbl

* Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG): 15,074,000 bbl

*  Asphalt:  9,043,000  bbl

*  Lubricants:  5,536,000  bbl

* Aviation (non jet) Gasoline: 494,000 bbl

*  Kerosene:  587,000  bbl

* Many, Many other things: 22,418,000 bbl

* Refinery losses: -30,000,000 bbl (That’s a minus, stuff that didn’t turn out rather right).

A couple notes.

Petroleum coke is closely pure carbon. It is used to formulate things like anodes for batteries, and furnaces, or as a fuel to heat things like forges. It is not an ingredient in soft drinks. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_coke)

Still gas is NOT employed to power a moonshine factory. It is gas that is emitted from the refining process. Since refineries use heat for some of their operations, in a move of thoughtful conservation, most of this is employed to provide heat for the process. OK. Ignoring those minor refinery losses, lets do the statistical thing, and give rise to galore quotable figures.

* 49% of our crude oil went into our gas tanks as gasoline.

* 22% of it went into trucks, farm and construction equipment, etc – Diesels.

* 7% went into our fleet of airplanes.

Seventy Eight percent of the oil we applied in October 2009 was employed for transportation. But, 22% of the oil we applied in October went to non transportation use. In industry, making plastics, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, roads, and a thousand other products. Some of it went to our propane gas grills, and that is good.

If you have decisive to experiment with hydrogen fuel and would like to build a fuel saver Hydrogen Generator, I would suggest the HHO Dry Cell design. The old water4gas HHO generator design was discarded by the pros long ago, and the hydrogen generators known as wet cells are inferior to the new HHO arid cell design.

With the new HHO arid cell design, the electrical current is focalized on the arid cell plates, this is how the arid cell gives rise to more hydrogen fuel with the use of less amps.

The HHO drycell is normally setup with four or five neutral plates, encased in various negative and positive stainless plates. The aim of the neutral plate is to help lower the voltage amidst the positive and negative plates which will make this cell run much more efficiently. This design formulates less heat and will form more HHO gas than the old water4gas and wet cell hydrogen generators, using less amps.

Another great betterment made with the HHO cell is the size of the unit. You may build an HHO dry-cell that is only 4″ x 4″ that will formulate as much HHO gas as an old 6″ x 12″ wet cell. Because of this great betterment in design, the dry-cell-kit may be installed in an area with less available space.

If you are ready to build an HHO generator, don’t even think with regards to buying HHO plans, you may get free plans for arid and wet cells all over the Internet. I have been providing DIY HHO plans for free, for various years.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Uses 2

Hydrogen is the quintessential eco-fuel. This invisible, tasteless gas is the most ample factor in the universe. It is the basic building block and fuel of stars and an necessary raw material in innumerable biological and chemical processes. As a completely nonpolluting fuel, it may hold the answer to growing environmental worries when it comes to atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide and the resultant Greenhouse Effect. In this book Peter Hoffmann describes current exploration toward a hydrogen-based economy. He presents the history of hydrogen energy and discusses the environmental dangers of continued dependence on fossil fuels.Hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier that, like electricity, ought to be manufactured. Today hydrogen is fabricated by “decarbonizing” fossil fuels. In the future it will be derived from water and solar energy and perhaps from “cleaner” versions of nuclear energy. Because it may be made by a assortment of methods, Hoffmann argues, it may be effortlessly adapted by dissimilar countries and economies. Hoffmann acknowledges the social, political, and economic troubles in replacing current energy systems with an exclusively new one. Although the routine of converting to a hydrogen-based economy would be complex, he demonstrates that the environmental and health gains would far outweigh the costs.

ReviewThe word hydrogen conjures images of excessive damage and destruction bombs and burning zeppelins (the Hindenburg) for most of us, but it inspires visionaries like Peter Hoffmann to picture clear skies and safer roads. Hoffmann’s book Tomorrow’s Energy traces the history of the volatile gas and explores choices for it is use as fuel. Though the author can’t keep away from using a heap of technical language, his writing must still appeal well beyond the community of automotive and power-plant engineers. His coverage, altho somewhat balanced, have a tendancy toward the positive attempts made by government, corporations, environmentalists, and scientists to promote hydrogen as a clean, comparatively safe, and potentially cheap substitute to carbon-heavy fuels.

Party-line Greens may gasp at a great deal of of the suggested schemes, which include using fixed nuclear power to generate hydrogen from water. But Hoffmann convincingly assures the reader that ultimately, the planet will be better off this way. Many will be amazed at how far hydrogen has progressed since severe exploration restarted for the duration of the 1970s fuel crisis: the range of cars, planes, and power networks using the gas for power storage is impressive and underreported.

From Library JournalEditor of The Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter and author of The Forever Fuel: The Story of Hydrogen, Hoffmann chronicles the global progression of hydrogen energy from a niche market to a viable mercantile product. Arguing that fossil fuels will not be cheap to find in the future and that renewables are getting less expensive, he advocates the use of hydrogen as a nonpolluting form of energy for fuel cells and as an energy storage medium. Hoffmann exhaustively details the history of hydrogen projects international from experimental fuel cell vehicles produced by the major automati manufacturers to exploration into the use of hydrogen as airplane fuel, the application of hydrogen in utilities in Germany and China, and a few experimental hydrogen-powered houses in the United States. Hoffmann candidly explains the masters and cons of the hydrogen debate, including safety issues, economics, and the difficultness in moving our national energy policy away from fossil fuels. Because there are so few books on this energy source, academic and public libraries that have a strong interest in substitute energy materials will want to buy for informed readers.

“Peter Hoffmann has succeeded in writing a comprehensive history of hydrogen as an energy carrier along with an evaluation of it is current status, so that the reader may judge the progression made to date in devising hydrogen as a supplement to electricity in delivering energy without environmental degradation. I do not recognise of any other book that covers this full range of hydrogen energy issues.”–C. E. But other uses of hydrogen are covered to some extent also. Topics discussed are automotive, utility, food production, home heating, hydrogen production, and many others. Hoffman notes in this volume time and again that hydrogen is an energy carrier, like electricity, and not an energy source, so it must be produced via energy sources such as coal, wind, solar, and nuclear, among others. Hoffmann does a very good job in this area, and the generation of greenhouse gasses is a central theme of this book, basically how we can generate hydrogen with little or no carbon dioxide buildup. As you may know, the combustion of hydrogen with oxygen only produces water. Safety of hydrogen use is another area extensively covered. The book begins with Hoffmann giving a history of hydrogen use and research over the past 200 years or so, right up to the present time, politics having an effect on our energy future also, of course. Senator Tom Harkin gives readers a very good foreward to the book.

One area of great interest to me that was mentioned in this book is the possibility of using atomic hydrogen (this is hydrogen in it’s disassociated state, not the molecular hydrogen) as rocket fuel, as Hoffmann says, a specific impulse of over 1000 seconds may be achieved, well above today’s rocket engines, if it can be safely stabilized. I wish this topic was covered better than the brief sketch Hoffmann gave it.

The final chapter of the book attempts to extrapolate the future use of hydrogen. Various experts are quoted by Hoffmann as to what we may expect in the decades ahead with regards to hydrogen use. Hoffmann does himself say that the existing energy infrastructure may be difficult to replace due to the economic inertia of change, and many decades may be required, in the United States it’s vast coal reserves may preclude widespread hydrogen use idefinitely. Overall, the volume is a good introduction to energy if sometimes a little short on the science. At the back of the book there are extensive notes with references to further reading for those desiring to do so.

A Slezak
This book has a lot of useful information but the problem is not the material but the book could use an editor. The story continually jumps back and forth. When the book uses comparisons it goes from Joules to BTUs then Gallons to Liters so you never seem to compare apples to apples or the book should have had a conversion table. It’s as if the author is afraid to tell the truth of how it might be a little expensive now to convert, but eventually it will be cost effective. The book also has no diagrams, or graphs that would explain fuel cells or cost effectiveness. …

The author seems to shy away from nuclear power as a solution for creating hydrogen. I think it would be a great interim solution where you could put the nuclear reactor on sites off shore or in the Great Lakes so you would have a supply of water and pump all the hydrogen and electricity produced to the city. The hydrogen could be sent to fuel cell power plants and fuel stations for vehicles. Eventually from the money made from this move on to geothermal methods.

I don’t want to seem down on this book because it gave me a lot of good information the best part was the different ways that they can create hydrogen. Hydropower, Wind, Solar, Photovoltaic, Biomass, Advanced Solar concepts, orbiting solar mirrors, converting thermal energy from oceans and Geothermal. The one that I left out that I thought was the coolest was the Giant Solar Chimneys. I found out that they are actually making one in Australia; I can only hope that it works. I liked the part with the solar mirrors and why they didn’t work, that was kind of funny.

The book never explains why they are not doing some of these things. I guess because of the cost but it is not clear. The best and safest way would be to produce hydrogen is geothermal but the book never explains why we don’t do it.

The chapter on the uses for hydrogen started out interesting but ends with a walk into the cosmos with the SETI stuff. It was parenthetical information that the author wanted us to be aware of that did not belong in this book.

This book seem like a confused mass of projects that never seemed to get off the ground and a couple that could be a solution for the future. I wish the book was organized so that the history came first and then focus in on various areas, production, types of fuel cells, different forms of hydrogen, infrastructure, present uses, future use and the road ahead and what are the possible type of plans for the future.

I wish the book could have recommended more books to read on the subject that could answer some of these questions.

I guess I was looking for more clear cut solutions.

But at the same time, I had expected more of it. It describes too many factual details about the history of hydrogen’s use in various applications and gives too few technical information about hydrogen as a fuel. The book does not give a very thorough analysis of how a hydrogen economy could be established, how those massive quantities of hydrogen will be produced in a way that is both environment friendly and realistic, why or why not to use nuclear power to do so, etc.
Rather, it leaves a lot of open questions and does not give answers to the issues that really matter (e.g. if hydrogen is produced through reforming of traditional carbon fuels, what to do with the carbon then at the production plant).
Nevertheless, the book is certainly worth reading… I think it’s one of the only serious books on hydrogen at this time.
